This leaflet is intended for patients undergoing minor eyelid procedure at the Eye Clinic, Royal London Hospital. While these instructions cover a number of procedures, your doctor or nurse will let you know if there are any medications or instructions specific to you.
Dos and Don'ts
You may have an eye patch after the procedure which can be removed after 3 hours. Please do not drive while you have the eye patch on.
It is common to notice puffiness and bruising around the eyelid after the procedure.
You may need to take over the counter pain medication (Paracetamol) for 48 hours after the procedure. Please let your doctor know if you are allergic to Paracetamol.
Please clean the operated area gently with a cotton pad dipped in warm water for the first 2 days.
Apply a cold compress immediately after the pad is removed, and then several times per day (see instructions below).
.
Apply your eye ointment and eye drops as instructed.
Eyelid compresses
-
Put ice or frozen peas into a plastic bag and wrap with a moist flannel or tea towel (not dry). If it is too cold, leave it for five minutes before applying it to your eyelid so that you do not give yourself frostbite.
-
Apply a cold compress three to four times a day, or as frequently as you can tolerate, to your closed eyelid. Make sure the eye remains closed. Keep the compress on the eye for 15 minutes at a time.
When to get in touch
-
If samples are taken for tissue testing (histopathology) or you need removal of stitches - you will be advised on follow up. If you do not receive your appointment within a week of your procedure, please get in touch.
-
If you experience worsening swelling, pain, redness, or sticky discharge please let us know.
-
Attend A & E if you have fever, severe eyelid swelling or reduced vision.
